January 2019 Wrap Up

1. Queen of Air and Darkness

This book was amazing! So many things happened and there were so much explosive plot scenes. If you’re a huge fan of The Infernal Devices, then you’ll really love a certain something/someone in this book. Even Emma and Julian’s relationship finally gets closure and solution in this book. The middle part of the book also introduces something new to the Shadow World and this book is a basis that there is more to the Shadowhunter world than just battling demons. Don’t be discouraged by how thick this book is because I tell you, it’s a worth it read and it won’t let you down. The ending was πŸ˜‰πŸ˜πŸ˜β€οΈπŸ’–πŸ™ˆπŸ˜Œ.

My rating: 5/5 ⭐️

2. Their Fractured Light

This book is the conclusion to the trilogy and what I can say is how the writing style of this book is so good that you will be hooked. It’s very easy to read despite the sci-fi and galaxy setting. Not everyone enjoys reading sci-fi books and tat includes me, but this series is pretty good and even the covers are gorgeous. The lives of everyone in the series are intertwined and they all unite in this book. I didn’t find the climax to be exciting though. Probably because the virus and the mind invasion plot didn’t really make sense to me. But I still love the characters and especially the romance in this book. It’s my favorite above all. There’s a chase and not to mention how Gideon protects Sofia in this book. It really gives me all the feels. And in my opinion, this book has the best flow among all the other books in the series, because there wasn’t a boring part in the book.

My rating: 4/5 ⭐️

3. Catwoman: Soulstealer

This book is perfect for fans of action and thieving and female power. Sarah J. Maas did not disappoint in terms of writing style. I was hooked and it’s also because I’m a huge fan of the DC Bombshells, that’s probably why I really enjoyed reading this book. I highly recommend this book to fans of femme fatale and female hero stories. Of course if you hate DC characters and DC stories, then I probably won’t recommend this book of course πŸ˜‚.

The book isn’t just about Catwoman, it also involves drama and romance and family. The family part was really unexpected for me. Some might say it was obvious but I didn’t expect what happened at the end of this book. The story really outdone itself and I can say that this is the best DC superhero novel from the series because of the characters and the unexpected plot and turn of events.

My rating: 5/5 ⭐️

4. Golden Curse

In my opinion, this books is probably something close to Throne of Glass in a way because of how the plot and the writing style was something like Throne of Glass. I did not expect this book to turn out how it did because this was an impulse Kindle buy for me. I just saw the pretty cover and the Amazon Kindle bestseller banner as well as the $0.99 price and I just bought it πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚. The plot did not rely heavily on the Rapunzel retelling story, it was only one small part of the book. The characters had their individual stories and I did not expect the ending!

The romance!!! Prince Alex and Etta had a swoony romance in my opinion. There was a chase and the prince did not know who she was at first which also leaves room for mystery in their relationship. The consummation part and when they finally got together did not come at the end of the book like other book series which I really applauded on. There was no slow waiting and they also did that ‘thing’ but it was not detailed. Overall, this book was really great because there was a greater threat to the kingdom and not just a small villain, but something like Maeve in the Throne of Glass series.

5. Truthwitch

I see this book so much in Instagram and I decided to finally read it! The book involves witches and all of them have their own powers. There are windwitches, voicewitches, bloodwitches, etc. the characters are nothing like Harry Potter, there’s no wands and magic in this one. The setting reminded me so much of Assassins Creed and renaissance Italy. From the start of the book, the characters are active and loud. Safi and Iseult love to talk to each other and banter. They also get themselves in trouble most of the time. I love reading about how Safi went from princess to a fierce character in this book. If you’re into books with a lot of character development and world building then this book is for you.

My rating: 4/5 ⭐️

6. Windwitch

This book is the sequel to Truthwitch and it introduces a completely different world because the characters are much more different in this book. Merik becomes a new person entirely and Vivia’s character is more introduced in depth and she gets her own kind of redemption. Safi and Merik are separated because this book focused more on the character and world development rather than the romance. Because even in Truthwitch, the romance was not focused on and I didn’t swoon.

My rating: 4/5 ⭐️

7. Red Queen

I actually read Red Queen back when it was released in 2015 and I just decided to read it now because I recently bought a copy of King’s Cage at a cheap price in my local bookstore ☺️. As before, I loved this book but I didn’t enjoy the sequel. I love the writing style and the plot but I didn’t like how the author kind of ruined the characters and the setting for me. I had higher hopes for the sequel. But Red Queen was downright amazing. It’s too bad that it’s only this book (in my opinion) is the best from the series. Cal had a swoony aura to him and I loved his personality in this book. Maven was also something (I won’t spoil) and he was really unexpected. Only in this book though.

My rating: 5/5 ⭐️

8. King’s Cage

I did not know what to expect when I read this book. I definitely did not expect the new characters and how this book turned out much better than Glass Sword. This book was set in different POVs and in different settings which made it all the more better. The readers also get an insight on Evangeline in this book. Even Mare improved in terms of her whining because rather than whining, she made some actions. Although she still talked about herself a few times. Cal also turned out better here than in Glass Sword. His relationship with Mare improved although that ending though….

My rating: 4.5/5 ⭐️

9. Wintersong

I loved this book! This is my first read for the #YARC2019 challenge and I loved it so much. It’s lyrical and enchanting. It’s kind of like a Hades & Persephone type of story. The writing style is very different from other YA authors so be sure that your comfortable with S Jae Jones’s writing style before you read this book. Also keep an open mind at all times while reading it. I mean there’s nothing negative about it but the story might not fit in with everyone’s culture and viewpoints in life.

My rating: 4.5/5 ⭐️

10. The Cruel Prince

Because The Wicked King just came out, I had to reread The Cruel Prince and immerse myself in the amazing Faerie world that Holly Black has created. I loved this book yet again and as it is the second time I am reading it, I discovered why people love Cardan and I just realized it now. The first time I read this I felt like he was just too cruel like a bully but then this time around I realized that he was doing it for her to notice him and since I’m a Draco Malfoy x Hermione Granger fan of the Harry Potter series, then I’m all in for Jude and Cardan. I can’t wait to read this next book which I’m already reading right now…

My rating: 5/5 ⭐️

11. Prisoner of Silk

I loved this book because of the fantasy setting of princesses, kings, and queens and especially the romance that came with it. That cover though! It’s a rather shallow book but I wasn’t looking for something heavy in fantasy so this book was light to read and I enjoyed it immensely because of the steamy scenes mixed with the curse plot of the story. It’s a retelling of Sleeping Beauty but in this case it’s more dark and heavy on romance which is exactly what I needed. I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for a light fantasy read and if you love stories that have the prince as the love interest. It also includes smut πŸ˜‰.

My rating: 4.5/5 ⭐️

12. The Wicked King

I finished this book exactly on January 31 and I loved it so much! Cardan changed from being an immature boy to a grown up king. He’s not annoying in any way like the boy king in the Red Queen series. He’s much more attractive and I love how there’s so much Jude and Cardan scenes that made me swoon. Despite the thinness of the book, it’s filled with so much plot and deceptions. Up until the very end.
